Something out of Nothing

چکیده

Based in Fort Myers, Florida, Tony Gaglio says his work employs themes from contemporary art, abstract expressionism, and the psychedelic experience. You might surmise as much from his works’ titles—Astral Messenger, Halogen, High Life, Cytoplasm, Ascension, Brain Feeder, and Anubis Gateway, to rattle off but a few. Other images are hash-tagged with keywords such as #symmetrybuff, #trippy, or #abstracters_ anonymous. For someone who claims to make art in his spare time, the wealth of images on his social-media channels is impressive. “I have been working in graphic design for around six years now,” he says. “Previously, I was only well versed in illustration, but it quickly died out for me as a hobby once I really discovered what my computer was capable of.” Like many folks, Gaglio came to psychedelic Photoshop imagery from an illustration background, but he soon realized what the digital world brought to the equation. He was able to translate the subjective into a recognizable reality. “When looking at the capabilities of a computer as opposed to the freehand from an artistic perspective, I see more use in my abilities with a computer to be able to create something than what I could do with the utilities of the traditional artist,” explains Gaglio. “The digital world allows me to truly illustrate and portray the images of my imagination, along with the ease of use and short time span.”

Kant and the table of nothing

At the very end of the Transcendental Analytic Kant argues that the two concepts something/possible and nothing/impossible, which constitute the starting point of traditional ontology, are not in fact the highest concepts. Instead, these two opposed concepts stand under a higher concept, namely the concept of an object in general, and result from that concept’s division. Both the concept of so...

Sommers' proof that something exists

1. Something is possible. 2. Whatever is not a categorially possible thing is not a possible thing. 3. Suppose there were nothing (i.e., nothing exists). 4. By definition D-things are categorially impossible if and only if nothing is D and nothing is D. 5. For any D, nothing is D and nothing is D. (by 3) 6. For any D, D-things are categorially impossible, (by 4 and 5) 7. For any D, D-things are...

Getting something out of nothing

We study quantum key distribution with standard weak coherent states and show, rather counter-intuitively, that the detection events originated from vacua can contribute to secure key generation rate, over and above the best prior art result. Our proof is based on a communication complexity/quantum memory argument.

An Example of an Investment Model That Makes Something Out of Nothing (Sort of): Implications for Building Applied Mathematical Models

Two related and under-studied components of modeling are: a) the process by which simplifying assumptions are derived; and b) the process by which tests of model validity are designed. This case study illustrates these processes for two simple investment models: a) a version of the model supporting classical portfolio theory; and b) a version of a mean-reverting model consistent with some of th...

Ontological Pluralism, the Gradation of Being, and the Question “Why is there something rather than nothing?”

More generally being wrong about being often leads to being wrong about many ontological questions. Besides denying that there are modes of being, a second, and perhaps even more widespread, mistake made about being is the denial that there are gradations of being, that some things exist more than others, or enjoy more being than others. The claim that there are gradations of being also makes m...
